Ankermoor Primary Academy

Here at Ankermoor, we strive for excellence across the entire curriculum and our foundation subjects are considered to be as important as the core lessons.  Each subject leader ensures that their subject is giving our children the depth of knowledge and enjoyment that they require to thrive.

Geography & History

At Ankermoor Primary Academy, our pupils are passionate about history. They are curious about the past and keen to understand how and why events occurred; they go on to question why people interpret the past in different ways. As a school, we believe that high-quality history lessons encourage skills of critical thinking, weighing evidence, sifting arguments, and allow pupils to develop perspective and judgement. Throughout their years at Ankermoor, pupils experience a rich and relevant curriculum, not just gaining knowledge of Britain’s past, and our place in the world, but helping them to understand the challenges of our own time…through studying the past, gaining skills for the future.

Geography lessons at Ankermoor inspire in pupils a curiosity and fascination about the world and its people that we hope will remain with each child for the rest of their lives.

Our pupils learn about diverse places, people, resources and environments, with a deepening understanding of the Earth’s key physical and human processes and of the formation of landscapes and environments over time.

Our Computing curriculum is full of opportunities for exciting and inspiring learning.  We will teach the children all the Computing skills that they need to aid their progression through their primary lives and help them prepare for their futures.  This will include areas of the curriculum like Computer Science, Networking, Communications, E-Safety and Multimedia. Children are exposed to the correct technical vocabulary and encouraged to use the same words within their work and conversations.  The children are exposed to a variety of different technologies: Microbits,  BeeBots, Ipads and Chrome books. We always aim to encourage all our children to be independent, as we believe this helps them to be the best learner possible.  Furthermore, children are encouraged to manage their own risks when browsing the Internet but with the knowledge of the correct procedures of how to report any concerns they have or may find.  E-safety is always a concern with the digital-age forever advancing and at Ankermoor, we consider this to be a high priority to consider.  From parent workshops and assemblies to hosting an entire e-safety week, educating the wider community is always something we are willing to help with.  Our Digital Leaders are available to help with concerns from their peers and will raise anything at frequent meetings with the Computing Leader.

Religious Education

At Ankermoor we believe every child should enjoy RE lessons through participation and exploration. To develop an understanding of the influence of different beliefs, values and traditions in an enjoyable, fun environment. We want our children to develop positive attitudes and show respect towards other people who hold views and beliefs different to their own and towards living in a society of diverse religions and beliefs. Our children will experience a feeling of togetherness through team work activities, positive classroom ethos and the day to day Ankermoor family environment, where children show perseverance throughout their learning. We want to encourage trust in all pupils by taking risks and by enquiring and questioning. Our children will believe in themselves and have high expectations of their own achievements to fulfil their own personal and spiritual goals. Every child will have the opportunity to acquire and develop knowledge and understanding of principle religions represented in the UK, along with exploration of our British Values.

At Ankermoor Primary, we strive to give all our children an enriched curriculum across each subject. Ankermoor Primary Academy is a nurturing learning environment in which each child is encouraged to develop their full potential and where their achievements and successes are celebrated and rewarded.  As a school, we believe that children are all individuals and therefore, we aim to encourage mutual respect, responsibility and foster self-esteem in a happy and caring atmosphere. Whilst teaching and encouraging children to build their own resilience and to develop a steady growth mindset. The teaching and learning of PSHE supports and upholds this vision.

PSHE deals with the diverse beliefs, values and attitudes that individuals and societies hold. We want to help pupils to develop themselves, their understanding of the world, and their ability to communicate their feelings. PSHE helps children to acquire British values and attitudes, which are necessary if they are to make sense of their experiences within school and life itself.  PSHE education cannot exist in isolation.  It is underpinned by our own school values of having high expectations, perseverance, respect, responsibility, trust and enjoyment in everything that we do.

Through PSHE, we believe we can enhance children’s education and help them become caring, respectful and confident individuals. We endeavour to help children learn about the importance of healthy, respectful relationships, focusing on family and friendships.
